Although ultimately not making the XI, that 21-year-old all-rounder Gus Miller was named in the travelling party for the opening game of the 2023 County Championship campaign against Kent at Canterbury shows how highly rated the academy graduate is among Northamptonshire’s coaching staff.

Having been awarded a rookie contract ahead of the 2022 season, he was given his first taste of professional cricket last summer.  A debut in a T20 fixture against the touring Indians was followed by four appearances in the One Day Cup, during which signs of his talents with the bat were shown with a 33-ball 31 against Hampshire.

While not given the opportunity to bowl during his outings with the first-team, he showed excellent early season form with the ball for the second XI in 2023. His seven wickets across the game, with figures of 4/21 taken in the second innings, helping his side to a nine-wicket victory over Glamorgan. Miller will be hoping that performances of such nature will see him push for further involvement with the first-team.
