Alex Russell took five wickets as Northamptonshire 2XI kicked off their season with an emphatic six wicket victory against Glamorgan 2XI.
After Gus Miller and Michael Finan enjoyed a tremendous day with the bat on Day 3, Glamorgan started the final day 110/2 and trailing the 2XI’s first innings by 99 runs.
George Scrimshaw was the one to strike first on the day, with his pace causing problems for Horton as he chipped one up in the air for Freddie Heldreich to take a simple catch.
Despite Russell taking five, it wasn’t until the 44th over until the young leg spinner picked up his first, brilliantly bowling Hurle and removing middle stump in the process.
Russell trapped Gorvin LBW four overs later and Glamorgan were 150/5.
Norton and MacGregor frustrated the 2XI, building a resilient 60 run partnership before Russell claimed his third thanks to a sharp catch from George Hargrave behind the stumps.
Prem Sisodiya hit 62 as part of 72 run partnership with MacGregor before trying to hit Russell to the boundary, just to be caught by caught by Tommy Sturgess for his fourth wicket.
MacGregor was the next to fall just seven runs short of his century as Michael Finan trapped him in front to leave Glamorgan 316/8.
Kellaway had retired out earlier in the innings meaning there was just one wicket left to take and Russell did that in the 90th over as Davies edged one to Gus Miller at slip. Glamorgan were all out for 327, giving the 2XI a target of 119.
George Hargrave and Arush Buchake opened up for the 2XI in their pursuit of victory but Buchake fell in the fifth over as he attempted to pull one off the bowling of Morris. Gus Miller fell quickly too as he bowled for 5 and the 2XI found themselves 28/2.
However George Hargrave and Aum Raykar put on a valuable 80 run partnership. Hargrave and Raykar fell in consecutive overs for 40 and 47 respectively, but the damage had been done by then.
Aadi Sharma and Rishabh Upadhyay only needed six runs to win and they cruised through to give the 2XI a victory in their first game of the year.
