Northamptonshire enjoyed the better of a draw in their Second XI Championship match against Leicestershire at Wantage Road.

The County batted on to extend their already formidable first-innings lead, and eventually declared on 499 for nine – 215 runs ahead.

David Murphy, unbeaten on 120 overnight, was dismissed for 144 while Will Rogers from Northamptonshire’s Academy contributed 50.

Leicestershire were batting again before lunch but despite tidy work from spinners Monty Panesar (17-8-28-0) and Graeme White (17-6-30-2) they held on for a draw at 178-4 after 69 overs.

Tom Wells top-scored for the visitors with 52 and the seconds return to competitive action against Warwickshire in the T20 tournament early next month.
