With back-to-back victories on the road for the Second XI against Kent and Leicestershire, they had the chance to continue this form at home as they welcomed Worcestershire Second XI to The County Ground on Monday.

Second XI Captain Charlie Thurston won the toss and elected to put Worcestershire in to bowl in the dreary Spring conditions.

Worcestershire began with an effective batting display, losing just the one wicket in the morning session. Despite Jack White taking Fell lbw early on, Cornall and Roderick formed an effective partnership before being caught by Gouldstone and Sales respectively after lunch.

Banton and Kashif Ali took over from where the previous partnership left off, batting well against a spirited Northamptonshire bowling attack to take Worcestershire into tea 190-3 in 71.0 overs.

The breakthrough did come for Northamptonshire in the final session as miscommunication with Kashif Ali saw Banton run out by Ben Curran for 45. It wasn’t long after that Ben Curran was involved again, catching Kashif Ali at first slip off the bowling of Jack White.

The final session of the day proved to reap even further rewards for Northamptonshire’s bowlers as Mohammed was caught behind and Jack White claimed his fourth wicket of the day, bowling Roshan Balaji for 0.

Bad light ended play at 18:01 with Worcestershire 253-7 in 85.0 overs.

Worcestershire 2XI 253/7 (Kashif Ali 80, J Banton 45).
