Warwickshire 2XI chased down 74 on the final day to beat Northamptonshire 2XI by eight wickets.

Having battled with tricky conditions and unfortunate weather throughout the first three days, Northamptonshire were sat at 162/4 and ten runs ahead going into today, with Broad and van der Merwe at the crease on 69 and 34 respectively.

The pair added just seven runs in the morning before Broad was caught at slip for a well-made 74 off the bowling of the threatening Simmonds.

Simmonds did for van der Merwe, too, pinning him LBW for a watchful 42 off 67 balls. Northamptonshire led by 32 with four wickets in hand with Arush Buchake and Alex Corbett at the crease looking to haul the visitors to a defendable target.

Buchake played nicely, cutting the ball well off the back foot as he struck four boundaries, however Corbett was removed for 6 off the bowling of Ali before Trodd dismissed Dom Leech for 0, leaving Northamptonshire 8 wickets down and 42 runs ahead.

Sunnier conditions on the final morning allowed Buchake to offer some resistance but when George Scrimshaw and Tiaan Louw were removed in quick succession, leaving Buchake stranded on 28 and Northamptonshire bowled out for 224, Warwickshire had a target of 74 to reach in just over two sessions.

Leech had Nahal caught behind in the opening over to make it 0/1 and add some energy to Northamptonshire in the field, however the home side’s counter-attacking approach saw the fielder’s hope fade as Warwickshire reached 29/1 at lunch, 45 runs from victory.

Shaikh hit three sixes as they raced towards the target, eventually dismissed by Louw for a rapid 32 off 19 balls. Gekis and Jani saw Warwickshire home, though, and they wrapped up the run chase inside 10 overs to secure victory.
