Young left-arm seam bowler Tiaan Louw has signed a professional contract with Northamptonshire.
A graduate of Bishops Diocesan College in South Africa, but born in High Wycombe, Louw will begin a two-year rookie deal until October 2026.
18-year-old Louw first caught the attention of County coaches at the age of 17 during Northamptonshire’s pre-season training camp in Stellenbosch. His ability to swing the ball both ways as a left-arm opening bowler made an impression on the coaching staff.
Tiaan’s cricketing journey began early, opening the bowling for Bishops Diocesan College’s First XI from the age of 15. His school career was marked by consistent performances, highlighted by his bowling averages: 13.2 in 2023 and 13.5 in 2024.
These statistics underscored his consistency and skill, making him a valuable member of the Bishops team that achieved the prestigious rank of number one in South Africa in 2024.
The 18-year-old featured for Northamptonshire’s 2XI in their four-day Championship match against Somerset in June as he picked up two wickets, including that of talented Somerset youngster George Thomas.
Speaking ahead of his move to the club, Tiaan spoke of his excitement at taking on the next challenge in his career.
“I loved my time at Northamptonshire in the earlier part of the summer and can’t wait to get cracking full-time now,” he said.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to paying back the faith that the club have placed in me.”
Second XI coach Graeme White was pleased with what he saw from Louw during the match at Taunton and is excited to see how the young man develops once he joins the club on a full-time basis.
White said: “Tiaan was thoroughly impressive during our game at Somerset – he bowled with real control. “He has got some good attributes for a seamer. He’s tall, swings the ball back in at a good pace for his age and we believe he’s got real potential to kick on and move forward.
“We’re hoping that Tiaan will gain a strong grounding here at Northamptonshire. We want to help him get used to the professional environment, including the training and the gym work that surrounds it, and give him the best opportunity to succeed.”
