Northamptonshire Steelbacks Women fell short in their run chase against a very strong Yorkshire side at Headingley.

Gemma Marriott top scored for the side with 41 but Yorkshire took the win by 53 runs.

On a red hot day in Leeds, Yorkshire captain Maddie Ward won the toss and decided to have a bat first.

It proved to be the right decision as Yorkshire looked strong in the opening six overs with Boyce and Thomas put on a 51-run opening stand before Mabel Reid dismissed the latter with the final ball of the powerplay.

By the halfway mark, Yorkshire were cruising at 79/1 and the partnership between Boyce and Duckworth continued to grow until the the 17th over when Duckworth was bowled by Lenny Sims.

Emily Carpenter struck in the next over as Boyce went for a very well-made 55 and in the penultimate over, Ella Phillips had Campbell bowled for 11.

At the end of their innings, Yorkshire finished on an impressive 167/4, leaving the Steelbacks with a lot of batting to do.

Gemma Marriott and Amelia Kemp opened up for the Steelbacks but found themselves restricted by the tight Yorkshire bowling.

Kemp made a run a ball 13 before she was caught Campbell off the bowling of Cooper in the fifth over.

By the end of the powerplay, the batting side were 31/1 and quickly falling behind the required run rate.

Mabel Reid was run out in the ninth over for 5, leaving Marriott and new loan signing Ariana Dowse the ones to try and up the rate.

Dowse made 17 before she was caught in the 15th over but Marriott remained resilient as she moved into the fourties.

Looking for a half century, Marriott was caught at long off for a well-made 41.

After the 20 overs were up, it wasn’t to be for the Steelbacks as they finished 114/4, 53 runs short.
