Northamptonshire Steelbacks Women claimed their second Vitality Blast Women League Two victory of the season with a composed five-wicket win over Leicestershire Foxes in a low-scoring contest.
After an impressive bowling and fielding display restricting the hosts to 108/7 from their 20 overs, the Steelbacks chased down the target with 13 balls to spare to secure a valuable victory.
Captain Gemma Marriott won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends as Northamptonshire made a strong start. Disciplined bowling and sharp fielding reduced Leicestershire to 34/4 at the halfway stage of their innings, putting the visitors firmly in control.
The Foxes attempted to rebuild through a promising partnership between Watson and Davies, but Anisha Patel swung the momentum back in the Steelbacks favour. The spinner produced two near-identical deliveries to dismiss both batters and halt the Foxes recovery.
The Steelbacks continued to apply pressure throughout the innings, with their excellent work in the field ensuring the hosts were limited to 108/7 and setting the Steelbacks a target of 109 for victory.
Openers Gemma Marriott and Mabel Reid began the chase, but Leicestershire responded strongly with the ball. The Foxes struck regularly during the powerplay, reducing the Steelbacks to 35/3 and giving themselves hope of defending their modest total.
However, Beth Ascott produced a calm and assured innings when her side needed it most. The batter anchored the chase with an unbeaten 39, sharing important partnerships with Presland and Clive to guide Northamptonshire back into a winning position.
Ascott’s measured knock ensured there would be no late drama, as the Steelbacks reached their target with 13 deliveries remaining to complete a convincing five-wicket victory.
The win ended a run of two consecutive defeats for Northamptonshire Women and lifted them to third place in the Vitality Blast Women League Two table ahead of their next fixture against Derbyshire at the cinch County Ground.
