Northamptonshire Steelbacks Women secured their spot in the next round of the County Cup with a five-wicket win against Worcestershire Rapids Women.

The Steelbacks chased down 96 inside 17 overs after restricting the Rapids with a brilliant bowling display.

After the Rapids called the toss right and elected to bat, the Steelbacks Women got off to the ideal start as Bethan Robinson bowled opener Gillgrass second ball.

Wickets then fell in the second and third over as GM Davies and PL Davies were removed by Ella Phillips and a run out resepctively.

At the end of the powerplay, the Rapids were 35/3 but that quickly changed as Davis was removed in the seventh over by Phillips for her second wicket.

24 runs were added before the Steelbacks claimed their fifth and sixth, Lenny Sims this time getting in the action by dismissing Hill and Beech.

Churms and Brett fell in the 16th and 19th over thanks to Phillips and Robinson and at the end of the 20 overs, the Rapids were 96/8, leaving the Steelbacks needing 97 for victory.

Openers Abby Butcher and Gemma Marriott made a fast start to the Steelbacks chase, putting on 38 between them during the powerplay.

Marriott fell in the over after the powerplay for 24 off 20 and Butcher was dismissed the over after for 16.

At the halfway mark, the Steelbacks looked comfortable 61/2 and despite losing three more wickets in the next six overs, most of the damage was already done.

In the 17th over, Lenny Sims hit the winning runs off the backfoot to seal a convincing five-wicket win and a place in the next round of the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup.
