Northamptonshire County Cricket Club can confirm that Matt Breetzke will not be returning to the Club in 2026.

The past year has seen Breetzke rise up the ranks in international and franchise cricket, meaning that his workload needs to be taken into consideration to ensure that he continues to hit those same levels.

With the IPL running from mid-March to the end of May, Matt will miss a number of games and with other international and potential franchise involvements, it has been decided that having an overseas player with full availability in the T20 Blast will be more beneficial to the team as we look to push towards another Finals Day appearance.

“I’ve really enjoyed the last two years with the Steelbacks but with the amount of cricket coming up, it wouldn’t be fair to return and not be there for all the games.” Breetzke said.

“I’m backing the boys to do well again this year and hopefully they get to another Finals Day.” He added.

Head Coach Darren Lehmann said: “We would’ve loved to have seen Matt back but being able to have an overseas player with us throughout the whole tournament will hopefully help us keep a good rhythm and settled squad.

“We’re all wishing him the best for the rest of the year.”

An overseas replacement for the T20 Blast will be announced in due course.
