A new female-only Walking Cricket programme is set to launch in Wellingborough, offering women from ethnically diverse and low socioeconomic communities the opportunity to get active in a safe and supportive environment. The programme, which has been awarded funding through the Sport England Movement Fund, is aimed at increasing participation in physical activity while fostering community spirit.

Starting on Tuesday, 29th April, sessions will be held at The Highfield Community Centre, running from 2-4pm. The first hour will be dedicated to walking cricket activity, followed by a relaxed social hour from 3-4pm, including a cup of coffee and the chance to connect with others.

The initiative is specifically designed to serve females who, due to cultural or religious reasons, may not feel comfortable participating in mixed-gender sessions. While the target audience is women from the surrounding ethnically diverse community, the programme is open to all females who wish to participate.

The Steelbacks Foundation, which is overseeing the project, aims to provide long-term opportunities by offering coaching, umpiring, and scoring qualifications to participants. This will ensure the programme’s sustainability after the initial 52-week cycle and help empower local women to take on leadership roles within their community.

We want to offer a safe and welcoming space for women in this area to get active, make new connections, and feel part of something special. This programme not only offers a chance to improve physical health but also to create lasting friendships and a sense of community.

The Steelbacks Foundation is committed to creating ongoing opportunities for all participants and will continue supporting the programme, aiming to expand it into other areas of Northamptonshire.
