Monty Panesar helped Northamptonshire to an exciting three-run victory in Monday’s opening Second Eleven Trophy fixture against Lancashire at Wantage Road.

Needing 209 to win, the visitors were dismissed off the penultimate ball of their 50 overs for just 205 – with Panesar claiming three for 30 from his ten-over stint.

The County earlier totalled 208 for nine thanks to handy contributions from Simon Branston (48no), Sam Arthurton (47) and skipper Rob Newton (42).

The teams will meet again for a three-day Championship match at Desborough on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – weather permitting.
