Australian Matt Kelly will join Northamptonshire for the opening rounds of the 2022 LV= Insurance County Championship.

The fast bowler has claimed more than 100 first-class wickets since his Sheffield Shield debut, at an average of just 29.

“It has been a long time held ambition of mine to play county cricket.” Kelly said.

“I’m delighted to be given that opportunity by Northamptonshire and can’t wait to test myself in different conditions against Division One line-ups.”

Kelly joins the squad ahead of Northamptonshire’s opening LV= Insurance County Championship fixture beginning at The County Ground on April 7th.

“I’ve heard really good things about the squad and set up in general and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Northamptonshire Bowling Coach Chris Liddle was excited by what Kelly offered the attack.

“I’m delighted to have Matt join us for the first few months of the summer and really excited to see him get a Northamptonshire shirt on and get going out there for us.

With already impressive numbers using a Kookaburra ball in Australian conditions, Liddle felt Kelly had the potential to make a big impact with the Dukes.

“Matt possesses a fantastic skillset that we feel is well suited to English conditions and will compliment our bowling attack nicely.

“He’s got a great record in red ball cricket and we think he’s a perfect fit for what we need, I can’t wait to get him over here and see what he can bring to the group.”

Kelly will be available for selection in Northamptonshire’s first six rounds of the LV= Insurance County Championship, starting against Gloucestershire at The County Ground on April 7th.
