Michaela Kirk struck a defiant 84 from 57 but it wasn’t enough as the Steelbacks Women fell short against Glamorgan Women.
The Steelbacks were bowled out for 192, 99 runs short of Glamorgan’s score of 291/8.
At a picturesque Colwyn Bay CC, the Steelbacks won the toss and elected to bowl first.
It looked like the choice paid off immediately as Mabel Reid bowled Lauren Parfitt for a four ball duck.
Daisy Jeanes and Abbey Freeborn rebuilt for the hosts, as they shared a 73-run partnership before loanee Ria Fackrell had Jeanes caught behind by Chloe Hill for 40 from 29.
However the breakthrough didn’t lead to any more wickets as Freeborn looked imperious at the crease, and the wicket-keeper batter hit a fantastic 124 from 123 deliveries before being bowled by Fackrell.
Megan Sturge also posted a half century which helped guide Glamorgan Women to an above par 291.
Having to score at just under six an over, the Steelbacks Women were already under a bit of scoreboard pressure. That pressure was increased as Chloe Hill miscued a pull shot and was caught by Megan McColl.
Amelia Kemp fell in the final over of the first powerplay, as she was caught well by Freeborn behind the stumps.
The leg-spin of Poppy Walker caused problems throughout the Steelbacks batting order. She finished with fantastic figures of 5/41 from her ten overs bowled.
Kirk looked calm and composed at the crease but after she fell for 84, it was a matter of time before the game was over.
The final wicket fell in the 39th over and Glamorgan claimed a comprehensive 99-run win.
The Steelbacks are back in action on Sunday when they face Middlesex Women at Radlett CC.
