Northamptonshire secured a second Specsavers County Championship win in as many matches with a stylish performance at Sophia Gardens.

The visitors to Cardiff dominated with both the bat and ball for the vast majority of the opening three days, and while Glamorgan forced play to go into a fourth day – the first time a Northamptonshire Specsavers County Championship match had used all of its allocated days in 2018 – it proved to only be a brief respite for the hosts.

Northamptonshire’s bowlers, who had taken four wickets in the final session of day three, took less than two hours to clear up Glamorgan’s remaining six batsmen.

Seekkuge Prasanna’s two late wickets on day three had broken through Glamorgan’s resistance, and he took two further scalps to end with final figures of 4-49 off his 20 overs.

Brett Hutton (2), Nathan Buck (2) and Luke Procter (1) shared the remaining wickets, and with Michael Hogan unable to bat Glamorgan were all out for 200, still 233 runs behind Northamptonshire.

Honours were shared in the first innings, with Northamptonshire leading by just 27 runs going into the final session of day two. And it was this period that decided the match as Ben Duckett and Procter turned on the style to score 169 runs.

This opening partnership was extended to 208 on the morning of day three, and while Glamorgan offered some resistance with a few quick wickets there was more punishment dished out by Northamptonshire’s batsmen after lunch, Steven Crook and Ricardo Vasconcelos putting together a 147-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

By the time Northamptonshire declared at tea they had a 434-run advantage, and with Prasanna playing an increasingly influential role under the sun with his leg spin Glamorgan found the mountain way too steep to overcome.

The wins over Gloucestershire and Glamorgan have moved Northamptonshire up two places in the Specsavers County Championship table and will give the squad a fillip ahead of the Vitality Blast campaign.
