George Bartlett struck an unbeaten 88 as both teams batted on a productive first day between Northamptonshire and Cardiff UCCE.

Northamptonshire batted first at a breezy Wantage Road and looked to survive an impressive opening burst by Caniston Gunaratnam and Joe Davies who made notable use of some helpful conditions early on.

Gus Miller and Ricardo Vasconcelos were removed early and when Calvin Harrison was caught behind off Gunaratnam, the home side were 32-3.

Louis Kimber, making his first home appearance in a Northamptonshire shirt, impressed with a counter-attacking 31 as he and Saif Zaib fought back with a well-crafted 70 run stand for the fourth wicket.

Kimber displayed his natural ball striking prowess with some brutal hitting throughout the morning whilst Zaib looked in serene touch, building on a remarkable 2025 season with another showing of class as stand-in captain for this game.

However, when Zaib was dismissed by Romano Franco for a brisk 41 on the stroke of lunch, Darren Lehmann’s side were 102-4 at the interval.

An afternoon of promising starts ensued with Rob Keogh and James Sales looking in fine touch for scores of 32, both in partnership with the excellent Bartlett.

Bartlett held the innings together with admirable discipline and fine stroke play all around the wicket, catching the eye with several glorious drives through the off side. He shared fifty plus stands with both Keogh and Sales after lunch. Northamptonshire reached 238-6 at tea with Bartlett well placed on 72 off just 77 balls.

Sales played confidently, defending astutely before dismissing some looser bowling as he and Bartlett accelerated into the evening. Sales eventually dragged a short delivery to the hands of the fielder stood at deep square leg, signalling a quickening of the Northamptonshire approach with the score sat at 248-7.

Dom Leech joined Bartlett late in the piece and blasted a rapid 19 to swing the momentum of the day in the home side’s favour.

Northamptonshire eventually declared on 282-8 with Bartlett twelve short of a century. A late flurry of boundaries propelled the home side to within the reach of 300, yet a pre-determined decision to give bowlers the necessary preparation saw the innings cut short.

Among the bowlers taking to the field for the final hour of play was Raphy Weatherall who played for the first time in nearly a year after an unfortunate run of injuries.

Weatherall bowled at good pace in tandem with Liam Guthrie at the top of the innings before a late Dom Leech wicket removed Ash Lakhani. Cardiff UCCE closed on 34-1, trailing Northamptonshire by 248 ahead of day two.
